Do Farmers Need A CDL?

This is a very common question and one that is not easily answered in a simple statement. The truth is that every state has different regulations as regards to farmers and farm vehicles that are registered to them.

There are some states that will allow you to drive a farm registered vehicle without a CDL as long as you are staying within that state and you are not hauling anything for money or for anyone else. If you haul produce for a neighbor, and they pay you for your services, then you are going to need a CDL.

However, some states will require you to have some kind of non-CDL endorsements on your regular driving license so that you can drive farm registered vehicles.

Farmers across the nation are known for signing contracts with a hand shake. This type of barter based system of trade will usually give you the freedom to drive your, or their, vehicle without too many issues. Once money is exchanged for those services, then having a CDL is required and you can end up getting into a lot of trouble if you don’t have one and are pulled over.

You will need to contact your state’s DMV to find out the particulars of driving farm registered vehicles without a CDL in order to be safe. Knowing the regulations is important and something that you will need to keep track of for the benefit of your own farm.
