What Drug Tests Are Required For A CDL Driver?

Federal guidelines require that all CDL drivers go through mandatory drug testing before they are allowed behind the wheel of a transport vehicle. These tests will include, but are not limited to, marijuana, opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, and phencyclidine (PCP and Angel Dust).

Some states and private companies also require alcohol testing as well as drug testing. These tests are set up to be taken before you are hired by a company. This ensures that you are safe enough to be hired. They will give you tests if there is reasonable suspicion of the use of drugs or alcohol while you are employed as well.

The final aspect of drug testing for CDL drivers comes in the form of regular random tests. These tests are set as random so that people aren’t allowed the opportunity to clean themselves up before the testing happens.

You will also find that you can be tested after having an accident in your vehicle. If the accident is fatal to others, then it will be mandatory according to the insurance regulations the company you are working for follows. If the accident is not fatal, then it will be left up to the company, in most instances, to determine if drug or alcohol testing is required.

Drivers can refuse these tests, but will be required to show proof as to why they are refusing or face permanent revocation of their CDL and never be able to drive.
